JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2027: Age Limit, Attempts, Subjects & More
Before you start preparing your JEE Main application form, it’s worth spending five minutes checking whether you actually meet the JEE Main eligibility criteria. Every year, a few students face last-minute issues during registration or counselling simply because they weren’t clear on the attempt limit, subject requirement, or the 75% board marks rule. This guide breaks down everything you need to know for JEE Main 2027, based on the pattern NTA has followed consistently since 2024.
1. Qualifying Examination
To appear for JEE Main 2027, you must fall into one of these categories:
Cracking JEE Main 2027 requires students to be in one of these categories:
- Completed 12th (or any equivalent exam) in 2025
- Qualify Class 12 (or equivalent exam) in 2026
- This is for Class 12 (or equivalent) in 2027
Students who have passed Class 12 in 2024 or any previous year, and students appearing after 2027, will not be able to appear.
2. Age Limit
No age limit at present for appearing in JEE Main. Applicants with the above qualifying exam, irrespective of age, can apply. But note that each institute (particularly some government or private colleges) might have its own age restriction for admission, which is independent of the eligibility of a candidate for JEE Main.
Note that unlike JEE Main, which doesn’t have any age restriction, JEE Advanced has a date of birth restriction (Candidates are required to have generally been born on or after October 1, 2002, with 5 years’ relaxation for SC/ST/PwD candidates); if you are planning to take JEE Main for an IIT seat, please make sure that you do not mix up the two.
3. Required Subjects in Class 12
To sit for JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech), your Class 12 subjects must include:
- Physics (compulsory)
- Mathematics (compulsory)
- One of: Chemistry / Biology / Biotechnology / Technical Vocational Subject
This is exactly why a strong grip on Class 12 Maths isn’t optional for JEE aspirants — it’s one of only two subjects that’s non-negotiable for eligibility itself. If your Maths concepts from Class 11 aren’t fully solid, it’s worth fixing that gap before Class 12 starts, through a focused Class 11 JEE Maths course rather than trying to patch it during board exam pressure.
4. Number of Attempts Allowed
This is one of the most misunderstood eligibility criteria for JEE Main:
- A period of 3 consecutive years (from the Class 12 passing year) of attempts is provided.
- Having two exams per year (January and April) means that you have a maximum of 6 attempts within those 3 years.
- There are no two separate “years of attempts”; the two sessions in the same year are considered as one.
- Don’t skip a year in between – the total window will not be extended.
If you have passed out of Class 12 in 2026, then you can appear for the JEE Main exam in 2026, 2027, and 2028 with a maximum of 2 attempts per year.
For droppers specifically, this means your clock is already running from your original Class 12 passing year, whether or not you actually appeared for JEE Main in that year. Planning your drop year strategically matters — many droppers benefit from a dedicated Dropper Batch that rebuilds weak chapters instead of just repeating the same syllabus passively.
5. Minimum Marks in Class 12 — Exam vs. Admission Eligibility
This is where most confusion happens, so it’s worth separating two different things clearly:

In simple terms: you can register and appear for JEE Main with any Class 12 percentage. The 75% rule (or top 20 percentile) only comes into play later, when you’re actually claiming a seat at an NIT, IIIT, or CFTI through JoSAA counselling. IITs, however, do not apply this 75% condition for JEE Advanced admissions.
6. Nationality
- Citizens of India can apply for this.
- NRIs, OCIs, PIOs and foreigners are also allowed to participate in JEE Main.
- No compulsion to use Aadhaar Card — If you don’t have an Aadhaar Card, you can use a valid passport, Bank Account Number, Ration Card or any Government ID to prove your identity.
- Normally, foreign nationals who are applying for admission to NITs/IIITs/CFTIs apply through the DASA scheme of Direct Admission of Students Abroad and not the regular route for JEE Main counselling; however, they should still fulfill the academic eligibility requirements for the JEE Main.
